Mx Kingdoms' Fair Series Rolls On Strong
July 29, 2000
Osceola Iowa
By: Mark D. Bonnell
Round two of the 2000, Fair Series was a flawless evening at the Clarke
County Fairgrounds in Osceola Iowa. The large crowd saw a very exciting show
for this, the third annual event.
When we got to the arena at 8:00am Saturday morning and realized that no dirt
had been or was going to be hauled in for the event this year we knew we had
a long day ahead of us.
Former fair board member and motocross fan Terry Bear was on hand as always
to help. Barker Implement in Creston Iowa had donated two Bob-Cat skid
loaders. With that and Terry Bears' loader tractor and disc, we started the
task of building the racetrack.
Breck Bonnell the announcer drew the track on a piece of paper and handed it
to track builder Mason Hines. As Mason set to work on the 250-foot whoop
section Terry and I started moving the dirt for the 60-foot spectator double.
By 1:00pm, the track was pretty much done and consisted of a three hundred
foot start straight, a third gear sweeper, the 60 foot double, an awesome
rhythm section and the brutal 250 foot whoop section. Not bad considering we
were working within a 350 x 160 foot horse arena.
The racing got underway at 6:30pm as planned with several good heat race
battles. Local rider Jesse Gildea put in a good solid ride for third in the
80cc heat race. In the 250 C, class George Riner of nearby Creston easily
took the win. Another Osceola resident Rick McDowell won the vintage heat
race.
After a short intermission, the races were back on. 16 year old Fort Dodge
Iowa resident Dusty McDonald told starter Mason Hines, "I'm not scared" when
Mason told the 125 A class that they were running 10 laps. Apparently, he
wasn't because he led from start to finish. Tony Wenck was able to race to
2nd place after going by the scorers in 10th place on the first lap. Russell
Spencer, Rick Spencer, and Justin VanMaaren rounded out the top five.
In the 250 C class, Derrick Hicks came out on top after the start and led
until lap 3 when eventual winner Michael Harmon was able to get by him.
Hicks held on to second and was followed across the finish line by Kile
Coleman, Troy Ball, and heat race winner George Rinner.
Since things got a little close in the 16-24 A class as Tony Wenck rode to
the win, all eyes were on Tony and Dusty McDonald as the 250 A class left the
line.
Tony Wenck was able to get out in front early and build an 8 second lead when
on lap seven his motorcycle decided it had had enough and seized right before
the spectator double. As Tony pushed his bike to the pits, the crowd
applauded and cheered him.
Dusty McDonald took the 250 A checker and even rode a couple of victory laps
for the roaring crowd. Dusty proved he definitely was not scared.
Be sure to make the August 19th, Mx Kingdom Inc. race at the Dallas County
Fairgrounds in Adel Iowa.
